Mediation is the intervention of a neutral and impartial third party in a dispute, "the mediator", who would hear the parties and compare their points of view in order to find a solution to the conflict.
 

The purpose of mediation is to try to reach an agreement between the parties as alternative conflict resolution.
 

Mediation may take place at any time during the proceedings at the request of the judge or one of the parties.
 

The mediator does not have decision-making power to assist the parties in conflict but is tasked with bringing them to find a solution to their dispute themselves.
 

The parties may be assisted by their lawyer during the mediation session while all exchanges during the mediation remain confidential.
